Has Niagara Falls ever stopped flowing water?
The Bridal Veil Falls on the American side at Niagara Falls ran dry just before midnight on March 29, 1848 due to a huge ice jam at the mouth of the Niagara River at Lake Erie. The wind had pushed all the ice into a position that completely stopped the water flow for almost 30 hours.
In November of 1969 The USA Army Corps of Engineers diverted the water from the American Falls to see if it was worth removing the rock pile at the bottom of the Bridal Veil Falls. It wasn't worth it and they turned the mighty Niagara Falls back on. The photo below is from 1969 but it would have looked very similar in 1848.
